Eden Westbrook death: Shock twist in the tragic case of Tasmanian teen ruled to have ended her own l

Publish date: 2024-11-05

A teenage girl ruled to have taken her own life may have met foul play, according to her grieving family.

The body of Eden Westbrook, 15, was found in Fisherman's Memorial Park in the seaside town of St Helens in Tasmania's north-east on February 18, 2015.

The teen had stormed off from home after an argument with her parents about her mobile phone use the previous evening and they had spent the night scouring the streets before her body was found early the next morning

The following year, a coroner ruled that Eden had died by suicide.

Nine years on, Jason and Amanda Westbrook are adamant their daughter didn't take her own life and believe she met foul play, claiming vital information was overlooked by police.

Their daughter's death is the focus of a popular podcast The Garden of Eden, which has been downloaded five million times since its launch eight months ago.

The podcast has also prompted new witnesses to come forward to back up claims of a cover-up in Eden's death.

'I initially thought it was badly bungled by the cops, but we launched the podcast and witnesses came forward (and) I realised it was more sinister,' the family's lawyer Peter Lavac told news.com.au.

It follows previous claims reported last year that an anonymous man had visited the Westbrooks' at their home and told them he knew what happened to Eden.

The couple had been in their garden after moving from NSW to St Helen's a few years earlier to run a landscaping business, when the man drove up their driveway.

He told them that he had been drinking with a friend and they had got talking on the topic of Eden.

The man told them the teenager did not take her own life but that she had been to a party, been given an overdose, and the way her body was found had been staged.

The family has also previously claimed that a psychologist contacted them in 2022 saying Eden and another underage girl were being sexually groomed by a 'powerful man'.

The family have renewed calls for a Royal Commission-style inquiry into her death to examine new information and interview new witnesses.

Mr Westbrook vowed to not give up until the truth comes out so he can finally put Eden's memory to rest.

'We really feel that Eden did not leave our home to commit suicide, we feel she left home because she had a fight with her dad and met with the wrong people,' he told news.com.au.

Coroner Olivia McTaggart noted in her 2016  findings that Eden was a caring person who was doing well in Year 10 and was highly regarded by both her students and teachers.

But she noted her school internet search history showed, perhaps not uncommonly for a teenager, searches on topics such as unprotected sex, depression and drugs.

She deemed Eden had been depressed, had previously attempted to harm herself, and had written a note six months earlier indicating an 'intent to end her life'.

Eden's family have always strongly denied these claims about the adventurous, athletic and funny teen.

Tasmania Police has acknowledged the lasting emotional toll on Eden's family and the local community.

A spokesperson added that the coroner’s findings were public and included the circumstances leading up to Eden’s death and the competency of the investigation.
